WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOU HIRE
US
When you hire the attorney and pay the retainer fee after your initial consultation, you should know what steps your attorney plans to take. For example, you should know when he expects to prepare the documentation and other papers related to the divorce and when your spouse will be served with those papers. You will be kept abreast of the latest developments in the case, so you will be prepared if your spouse shares with you any information about the case. You can always make an appointment to come see the attorney, and if you think it's important, then you are encouraged to do so. Every attempt will be made to return your phone calls the same day. However, because the attorney has commitments in court nearly every day, it is possible that your call will not be returned until the next day. In any case, your calls will be returned as soon as possible. It is very important that you call this office immediately and inform the staff of any changes in your living arrangements or employment. Be sure to inform this office immediately of any changes to your address or telephone number. It is very important that we be able to contact you at any time. Your attorney will give you homework to do. It is often very helpful if you would prepare a written narrative describing a detailed history of your marriage and the reasons for the divorce . In addition, we will need a detailed listing of all the assets of the marriage, including retirement plans, investments, and bank accounts. We will also need an itemization of the debts of the marriage. If custody is to become an issue in your divorce, your attorney will need extensive information concerning the children. Do not execute any documents without the advice and approval of your attorney. Do not rely upon the advice of your spouse's attorney in making a determination of what is an appropriate settlement in your case. Your spouse's attorney cannot advise you as to the consequences of your actions and his sole purpose is to protect his client. If the divorce is approached with professionalism by you and your attorney, and if you work together for a common end, the resulting court decision may salvage for you a situation that could otherwise be a disaster. However, it is up to you to enter into this process with open eyes, and maintain an honest dialogue with your attorney and his staff. Finally, no reputable attorney will guarantee a result in any legal matter. We will strive to get you the results you desire, however, the outcome always depends upon the facts of the case, the parties involved, and most important, the final rulings made by the Judge. |
